CHAPTER 21

JULIETTE

Three knocks on the door.

I rubbed at my eyes before managing to crack open the right one. I peered around a bedroom aglow with sunlight. Chris’s bag sat open on the dresser, from which he’d revealed several condoms over the course of three hours last night, where we made the sheets sweaty and tested the strength of the bedframe.

Like, seriously tested it.

“Hello?” I called, my eyes still adjusting to the brightness and my muscles to being awake. It had been a hell of a night, and my thighs felt like I’d done a thousand squats.

“Are you decent?” Sandi’s little voice came from the other side of the door.

I lifted the blankets and found myself naked.

Erm. Shoot.

“Hold on one second,” I called as I threw the blankets off and scrambled to find my clothes. My overnight bag sat on the floor beside the dresser, and I rummaged through it, pulling out the first things I put my hands on: a pair of leggings and an oversized sleeping T-shirt with an album cover of The Doors on it. My dad had bought me the shirt at their concert when I was nineteen, and after he died, I started wearing it more often to bed. “Come in!”

The door opened with a creak.

Sandi poked her head in and smiled. “Good morning.” Her hair, the same sandy shade as her father’s, stuck out every which way as if she’d been given an electric shock moments ago.

I ran my fingers through my own disheveled hair. Undoubtedly, it was as messy as little Sandi’s. “Morning,” I chimed, hoping I sounded more alert than I felt. Chris and I had been up late. I’d fallen asleep feeling like I ran a marathon, and maybe I had. Dimly, I wondered what sort of fitness reports could have been generated had I been wearing a smartwatch.

I snickered to myself at the thought.

Sandi came into the bedroom with a large tray in her hands. The door opened a bit more, and Chris came in behind her, wearing a cheeky smile as he warned Sandi to watch her step on the bedroom rug. She moved gingerly across it, cutlery and dishes rattling in her hands, before setting the tray down on the end of the bed with a triumphant smile.

I looked down at the tray, which was loaded up with all kinds of goodies: coffee, orange juice, croissants, crispy bacon, diced cantaloupe and honeydew melon, and scrambled eggs.

“What’s all this?” I breathed.

Chris put his hands on his daughter’s small shoulders. “It was all Sandi’s idea.”

“Sandi, this is so thoughtful,” I said as I inched closer to the tray. The aroma of the coffee made me feel almost drunk. My tastebuds tingled and my mouth began to water as I eyed the bacon but reached first for the mug of my rich morning savior.

Sandi clasped her hands together beneath her chin. “They always eat breakfast in bed in the movies when the boy likes the girl.”

Chris and I shared a look.

“Oh?” I asked with an arched eyebrow.
